Opening ceremony of the 2024/2025 academic year

The opening ceremony of the 2024/2025 academic year of the University of Tartu takes place on Monday, 2 September at 10:00 in front of the university's main building. 

The ceremony starts with the opening speech by Rector Toomas Asser. This will be followed by a few words from Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas. On behalf of students, president of the UT Student Union Renar Kihho and first-year student of Law at the Faculty of Social Sciences Maret Hallik will greet the participants.

The Academic Women’s Choir of the University of Tartu will perform, and next, the alternative pop ensemble Lonitseera will take to the stage. The band, which grew out of a singer-songwriter project five years ago, surprises the listeners with sharp lyrics and sensitive interplay.

Kristin Kaha – back vocals 
Mart Nõmm – double bass 
Tõnis Kirsipu – percussions 

A tent of the UT Gift Shop will be set up to the left of the main building, where you can purchase UT souvenirs and printed material. 

The event will have simultaneous interpretation in English, with headphones available next to the tent of the UT Gift Shop. The ceremony with English interpretation (with a short delay) can also be followed on UTTV, using personal headphones and a smart device. 

The ceremony will approximately last an hour.
